Everyone Loves Fun – But Do We Really Need a Third Party?

Twenty-nine years ago, I don’t remember dealing with dental insurance. Initially, its popularity seemed to be based on a few legitimate “claims.” Patients were encouraged to use their benefits to obtain proper health care, dentists experienced increased business and received relatively fair reimbursements, and the insurance companies made a profit. Today, for the most part, the situation has deteriorated. Patients are now encouraged to visit specific dentists (or “providers,” as they are now called) who deliver services at a discounted fee in order to receive an increased volume of “heads” from the insurance company. The approval process for many dental procedures has become extremely cumbersome, and the ability of the dentist to provide quality care has suffered. Based on this type of deteriorating arrangement, this “middleman” is a hindrance and should be eliminated.
A wise patient should choose a dentist who will address legitimate dental needs, formulate a written treatment plan, and if possible, arrange financing the patient can afford—regardless of insurance coverage. It’s strange, but it seems that if patients don’t need a lot of dental care other than a few cleaning appointments and periodic exams, they don’t need to be paying insurance premiums—and if they do need extensive dental care, most policies have severe limitations that usually significantly interfere with successful treatment.
