Old fashioned dentistry?

I had my teeth cleaned recently by the hygienist at the dentist upstairs. We were talking about the great expansion and proliferation of implant dentistry. She mentioned that a dentist she worked with was "old fashion" in that he didn't do a lot of implant dentistry but saved natural teeth when he could. This struck me as odd because it equates old fashioned with less sophisticated or obsolete dental therapy. Implant therapy involves surgery, some degree of morbidity, and most times it is very expensive. When indicated (when it is not possible to restore a natural tooth) and if performed properly, it is a valuable means of restoring a fixed dentition. Dentists that choose to attempt to save a natural tooth rather than resort to implant therapy are not old fashioned. They are smart, empathetic, and considerate of what is best for their patients.
